Fire curtain safety for student housing, east London
This student housing project for Unite features a block rising to between 8 and 14 storeys. Above a ground floor podium containing commercial space, the accommodation comprises 759 student bedrooms. Most of these have been arranged in clusters with shared kitchens for modern student living, with a minority of the units set up as individual self-contained studio flats. The U shaped design of the block makes the most of an open south facing central courtyard. With one side of the site abutting railway lines, the building team liaised carefully with Network Rail, to ensure the construction could proceed without compromising train services or the safety of construction workers.
The design presented challenges, in terms of fire engineering, with Greenwood called on to advise on the best solution. To achieve the desired result, Greenwood engineered a fire curtain to provide protection for the building’s lift lobby, combined with a security roller shutter for the front reception desk area.
