Project Profile: Creating safe and comfortable spaces away from home

About the project
The coastal town of Bournemouth is a popular location for students hoping to study at one of the UK’s top-ranked universities. Knowing that moving to university is an exciting yet sometimes difficult challenge, The Student Housing Company has developed two residences in the sea-side destination to ensure students feel that they’re in a home away from home.
The Belaton House and Bailey Point projects are located in the centre of the student area of Bournemouth. With good transport links and access to all campuses, the two student accommodation options have been constructed as private rentals and university lets – giving students the freedom to decide what works best for them.
Why Greenwood Louvre
When designing student accommodation safety is a main concern. It is fundamental when considering buildings with multiple occupants that fire protection, both passive and active, work in collaboration to safely contain a fire if one were to occur.
As well as fire alarms, smoke extraction and ventilation units are in place to ensure an appropriate means of escape and entry for firefighters in the event of a fire.
With over forty years of expertise in the design, manufacture and installation of smoke and heat ventilation units, Greenwood Louvre was chosen as the ventilation partner of choice to supply both student accommodation blocks with smoke extraction systems in the lobby.
As an essential component in the fire protection of the building, the lobby smoke ventilation system has been designed to meet the requirements of both UL555 and UL55S, making it suitable for smoke control and fire protection. Acting as a dual-purpose solution, the unit provides fire rating (tested to FD30s) while closed, and effective smoke ventilation when in the open position.
A cost-effective solution for multi-storey buildings or those of multiple occupancy, the Greenwood Louvre Lobby Ventilator was an ideal choice to support the buildings’ compliance to relevant safety requirements and to offer peace of mind in performance.
